A Day of Wine and Scenic Views: Exploring on the Franschhoek Wine Tram

Table of Contents

Introduction to Franschhoek and Its Wine Legacy

Franschhoek, a picturesque town nestled in the heart of South Africa’s Cape Winelands, is renowned for its lush vineyards and rich history dating back to the French Huguenots who settled here in the 17th century. Today, it’s a top destination for wine lovers, offering not just exceptional wine but also breathtaking views and a variety of experiences, one of the most popular being the Franschhoek Wine Tram.

Getting to Franschhoek

After an hour-and-a-half drive from Cape Town, primarily on the national routes N1 and N2, we arrived in Franschhoek, ready to embark on the Exceptional Wine & Cuisine Experience via the Franschhoek Wine Tram. The tram takes you to some of the finest wineries in the region while offering panoramic views of the valley.

Exceptional Wine & Cuisine Experience

The Exceptional Wine & Cuisine Experience is one of the premium offerings by the Franschhoek Wine Tram. This curated tour is designed for wine and food enthusiasts who want to explore the best of what Franschhoek’s wineries have to offer in a more structured and intimate setting. The experience typically includes a guided tour, a breakast and wine pairing at Mont Rochelle Winery, a wine and lunch pairing at Grande Provence, and a dessert and wine pairing at Haute Cabriere. Guests also experience a Sabrage demonstration, a traditional method of opening a bottle of sparkling wine with a saber.

Mont Rochelle Winery

Our first stop was Mont Rochelle, a winery owned by Sir Richard Branson. Mont Rochelle is known for its premium wines and exceptional hospitality. Here, we enjoyed a breakfast paired with wine—a unique experience that set the tone for the day. The vineyard, with its manicured lawns and stunning views, provided a serene backdrop. The food was stunning and well paired with the wines. Mont Rochelle’s commitment to quality was evident, and we ended up purchasing a couple of bottles to be shipped home.

Grande Provence: A Historic Winery

Next, we boarded the tram to Grande Provence, one of the oldest wineries in the Franschhoek Valley. Established in 1694, Grande Provence offers a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Before lunch, we were given a tour of the wine-making facilities, where we learned about the process and history of their wines. Although the wines here didn't quite match our personal taste preferences, the setting was undeniably beautiful, and the oysters served with lunch were a highlight.

Haute Cabrière: The Grand Finale

Our final stop was Haute Cabrière, a winery distinct for its underground cellars dug into the side of a hill. This cooler, subterranean environment was a welcome respite from the hot afternoon sun. We were treated to a demonstration of Sabrage—the art of opening a bottle of sparkling wine with a saber. Afterward, we enjoyed dessert paired with more wine. While we found the wines here to be mostly white and not quite to our liking, the experience of dining in such a unique setting made up for it.

Reflections on the Experience

While the Exceptional Wine & Cuisine Experience offered a well-structured and informative tour, we felt that it was a bit too regimented. The tight schedule left little room for exploring the wineries or the town of Franschhoek at our own pace. If we were to visit again, we would likely opt for the hop-on hop-off tram option, allowing us to choose our stops and spend more time at the places that interest us most.

Tips for Future Visitors

  1. Book in Advance: The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a popular attraction, so it’s best to book your tickets ahead of time.

  2. Consider the Hop-On Hop-Off Option: For more flexibility and time to explore, the hop-on hop-off tram might be a better choice.

  3. Plan Your Day: Franschhoek has more to offer than just wine. If you’re interested in exploring the town, consider allocating extra time before or after your tram experience.

  4. Prepare for Load-Shedding: As with many places in South Africa, load-shedding can affect your experience. It’s a good idea to ask about backup power options at the venues you visit.
