The Upper Rock of Gibraltar is a unique destination known for its stunning vistas, historic sites, and, most famously, its population of Barbary macaques. If you’re planning a visit, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your experience—while keeping your belongings safe from these mischievous primates!
Meet Gibraltar’s Famous Residents: The Barbary Macaques
Gibraltar is home to Europe’s only wild monkey population, the Barbary macaques, and they’re as charming as they are notorious. With a reputation for snatching snacks and items from tourists, these monkeys add an extra layer of excitement to any visit. While they’re entertaining to observe, it’s wise to take precautions. Keep bags, food, and valuables secured and avoid interacting directly with the monkeys, as they’re known to be opportunistic.
Top Tips for Visiting the Monkeys
Keep Your Belongings Close: The monkeys are curious and quick, so keep bags zipped and avoid displaying any snacks or small items that might catch their attention.
Observe, Don’t Interact: Though adorable, the Barbary macaques are still wild animals. Refrain from touching them, feeding them, or attempting to get too close.
Be Aware of Their Habits: Monkeys in the area have grown accustomed to visitors, but they’re still unpredictable. Be cautious, especially around younger macaques, who may approach out of curiosity.
Scenic Highlights of the Upper Rock
Beyond the monkeys, Gibraltar’s Upper Rock offers plenty to see and explore:
St. Michael’s Cave: A remarkable natural cave with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, as well as a rich history. The cave is often used as a performance venue, adding a unique cultural twist to its natural beauty.
The Great Siege Tunnels: These historic tunnels date back to the 18th century and were originally used for military defense. Today, they’re open to visitors who want to explore Gibraltar’s storied past.
The Mediterranean Steps: For the adventurous, this steep trail offers panoramic views of the Strait of Gibraltar and beyond. It’s a challenging hike but worth the effort for the breathtaking scenery.
The Windsor Suspension Bridge: Spanning 71 meters, this impressive suspension bridge offers breathtaking views of the Gibraltar landscape below. Situated high above a scenic gorge, the bridge is both an exhilarating experience and an excellent photo spot.
Practical Information for Visiting
Getting There: Gibraltar is accessible by foot from the Spanish border, with taxis and cable cars available to take you up to the Upper Rock. The line for the cable car can be quite long on busy days but I recommend that over the taxis as the taxis get into traffic jams once they get up top. Purchase your cable car tickets ahead of time and it will save you some time in line.
Admission: Entrance fees vary depending on the attractions you wish to visit, with combination tickets available for major sites.
Safety: While the monkeys are a big draw, it’s essential to respect them as wild animals. Keep your distance, avoid making direct eye contact, and don’t bring out any food that might attract their attention.
Final Note: Respect the Wildlife
As tempting as it may be to snap photos of or with the monkeys, remember that they’re part of a delicate ecosystem. Keeping interactions minimal helps protect their natural behavior and ensures future visitors can enjoy them too.
