Ready to daydream about white-sand beaches and sparkling blue waters? Welcome to the Maldives, where paradise really does exist. We had the unbelievable opportunity to experience it ourselves, staying in one of those iconic overwater villas at Kuramathi Resort in the Maldives. And let me tell you, it was every bit as magical as it sounds—this is one of those splurge-worthy vacations you’ll never forget!
Kuramathi Resort: Welcome to Bliss
Kuramathi Resort is located in the Rasdhoo Atoll, part of the Alif Alif Atoll, one of the Maldives' more remote yet picturesque regions. Spanning over 1.8 kilometers, Kuramathi is one of the largest islands in the Maldives, offering the perfect mix of tranquility and space to explore.
Instead of arriving via the typical seaplane, we took the ferry ride, which allowed us to soak in the beauty of the surrounding atolls. The Maldives may be a bit of a journey to get to (those long-haul flights aren’t exactly light on the wallet), but when you arrive and see those turquoise waters for the first time, it all feels worth it.
Once we arrived, we were greeted by lush greenery, soft white sand, beautiful birds, fish, and the kind of views that instantly melt your stress away. But of course, this paradise does come with a price tag—it’s a place where every detail is crafted for luxury, and you feel it in every step you take.
Deluxe Overwater Villa: Pure Luxury
Now, let’s talk about the deluxe overwater villa. If you’re picturing ultimate relaxation, you’ve nailed it. Waking up to the sound of waves gently lapping beneath you, stepping out onto your private deck with endless views of the Indian Ocean—it was like living in a postcard.
While we didn’t have the famous glass floor panels, the villa was everything we could have dreamed of. A huge Jacuzzi tub, a private deck with a private pool, and, steps leading directly into the crystal-clear waters. It had a spacious, modern interior made for the perfect balance of luxury and comfort. It’s the kind of place you can’t help but feel a bit pampered in—and while the per-night rate isn’t insignificant, this level of indulgence is what makes it feel like a once-in-a-lifetime escape.
Dive Into the Underwater Wonderland
Snorkeling at Kuramathi? Unreal. The island is known for its house reef, home to some of the most vibrant coral reefs and marine life in the region. As soon as we jumped in, we were greeted by a colorful array of coral and tropical fish, not to mention the occasional sea turtle or reef shark cruising by.
For those who want to explore even further, Kuramathi has a fully equipped dive center. While diving excursions may come at an extra cost, they give you access to some of the most amazing underwater sights the Maldives has to offer—an experience you won’t soon forget.
The Iconic Sandbar: A Walk Into the Horizon
One of the most magical features of Kuramathi is its long, sweeping sandbar. Stretching out into the endless turquoise waters, this narrow strip of sand feels like a pathway straight into the horizon. Walking along the sandbar, with water gently lapping at your feet on both sides, is one of those experiences that truly takes your breath away.
Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll during the day or catching the incredible views at sunset, the sandbar offers a sense of serene isolation that’s hard to match. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the island’s natural beauty, take some stunning photos, or even enjoy a quiet moment with your thoughts.
The sandbar also shifts with the tides, so depending on the time of day, it might be fully exposed or partially submerged, adding to the sense of adventure each time you visit. For many guests, walking along the sandbar is one of the most unforgettable parts of their stay.
Sunsets & Serenity
The sunsets here? Pure magic. Picture this: lounging on your deck with a refreshing drink in hand, watching the sky turn shades of pink, orange, and gold as the sun dips below the horizon. Whether you're catching it from your villa or at one of the island’s sunset bars, it’s absolute perfection.
Savoring the Flavors of the Maldives
Foodies, you’re in for a treat at Kuramathi. The resort has 12 restaurants and 7 bars, each offering a unique dining experience. From freshly caught seafood at Reef, to a romantic dinner under the stars at The Island Barbecue, every meal felt like a culinary adventure. There’s even Dhoni Bar, perfect for a cocktail while listening to live music as the waves lap the shore. Whether you're in the mood for sushi, Mediterranean, or Maldivian flavors, Kuramathi has you covered.
Dining here is as much a part of the luxury experience as anything else, and while it may add to the cost of your stay, indulging in a sandbank dinner (a private dining experience on a secluded beach) is one of those unforgettable memories that make it worth the splurge.
Best Time to Visit: Weather & Crowds
When it comes to visiting Kuramathi, timing can make all the difference. The Maldives enjoys a tropical climate, meaning warm weather year-round, but it’s divided into two distinct seasons: the dry season (December to April) and the wet season (May to November).
Dry Season (December to April): This is the most popular time to visit, as the weather is at its sunniest and driest. Expect clear skies, calm seas, and lots of sunshine. It’s also the peak tourist season, which means higher prices and more people, so you might find the resort a bit busier during these months.
Wet Season (May to November): The wet season brings occasional rain showers and slightly rougher seas, but don’t let that deter you! Rain usually comes in short bursts, leaving plenty of time for sunshine in between. The best part? The island is quieter, and you can often score better deals. Plus, the lush green vegetation after a rain shower is stunning.
We visited at the end of August, right in the middle of the wet season, and honestly, it was perfect. Out of our 10 days there, we only had one rainy day. The resort was incredibly peaceful—it didn’t feel crowded at all, with plenty of personal space and moments of quiet. If you’re looking for a more serene and relaxed experience (with a slightly lower price tag), the off-peak season could be the way to go.
Staying at Kuramathi Resort wasn’t just a vacation, it was an escape from reality—one we didn’t want to leave. Sure, getting here involves some long flights and the per-night cost isn’t minor, but when you’re surrounded by this kind of beauty, it’s an investment in memories you’ll cherish forever. So, if you’re ready to experience a true slice of paradise, an overwater villa in the Maldives is calling your name!
