The Two Must-Have Travel Items I Take on Every Trip (and Why You Should Too)

This one is for the ladies! When it comes to packing for travel, it’s tempting to focus on Instagram-worthy outfits and trendy accessories. But after years of adventuring around the globe, I've learned that comfort and versatility trump fashion every time. And there are two items that never, ever get left behind: my Merrell Moab hiking boots and my trusty maxi skirt.

1. My Ride-or-Die Hiking Boots:

Let’s start with the hiking boots. I'll start with the specifics since someone will always message me and ask - the exact style that I've been wearing for years are Merrell Moab 3'sfrom REI.

These aren't just another item on my packing list; they’re my constant companion. Whether I’m strolling through cobblestone streets in Europe, tackling rugged mountain trails, or even navigating rainy streets in Asia, my Merrell Moab hiking boots have proven time and again that the right footwear can make or break a trip.

Why Merrell Moab boots? Well, nothing derails a good day of exploring faster than sore feet. I’d much rather confidently lace up my well-worn boots than deal with blisters from trying to break in something ‘cuter.’ These boots have seen it all—muddy hikes, sandy beaches, and even airport sprints. They’re the unsung heroes of my adventures, allowing me to trek all day without a second thought.

Pro Tip: I always wear my hiking boots to and from my destination, especially when flying. They’re too bulky to pack, so wearing them saves space and weight in my luggage.

What to Look for in Travel-Worthy Hiking Boots:

  • Durability: The Merrell Moab boots are built to handle varied terrains.

  • Comfort: They offer excellent support for long walks and uneven surfaces.

  • Water resistance: They’ll keep your feet dry, even when you’re caught in a downpour.

While I swear by Merrell Moab boots, it’s important to remember that footwear is incredibly personal. The right pair for me might not be the best for you, so pick the brand and style that suits your feet and walking style. If you’re not familiar with how boots should fit, I highly recommend getting fitted by the staff at REI—they know their stuff! And keep in mind, boots tend to feel stiff for the first few wears, so don’t be surprised if they need a bit of breaking in.

Bonus Foot Care Tip: I swear by Injinji Toe socks. These are also available at REI. Since I started wearing them, I haven’t gotten a single blister—even after walking the entire Camino de Santiago. These socks are a game-changer for long treks.

2. The Versatile Maxi Skirt

Now, let's talk about the dark horse of my travel wardrobe—a long, stretchy, cotton maxi skirt. Here's an example. While it may not scream "adventure gear," it's become one of the most versatile pieces I own. I usually buy long, cotton, stretchy skirts from REI, Target or Amazon, and they’re perfect for nearly any occasion, from casual dinners to a beach cover-up. And when I was hiking the Camino de Santiago, it even doubled as a post-shower "dress" when I needed something quick and comfortable to wear back to our room. I could even get dressed underneath it in a pinch. Sometimes privacy is a bit hard and bathrooms/restrooms are quite small at alburgues/hostels.

A maxi skirt is lightweight, packs down small, and works just as well in a bustling city as it does in a sleepy rural village. After a 30+ days of hiking, when you are crabby, hungry and all you want to do is relax with a glass of wine, that maxi skirt will be there for you. See proof below.

Pro Tip: I roll up the maxi skirt for easy packing. This technique minimizes wrinkles and helps it fit neatly in my luggage.

Why You Should Pack a Maxi Skirt:

  • Multi-purpose: Wear it to dinner, as a beach cover-up, or as loungewear.

  • Comfort: It’s flowy and breathable, perfect for cooling down after a day of exploring.

  • Easy to pack: Takes up hardly any space in your luggage, especially when rolled.

The maxi skirt is suitable for all types of weather, except when it’s cold. But beyond that, it’s truly versatile. I’ve paired it with everything—from a nice shirt or tank top to a graphic tee and even a sweatshirt. It can work with nearly any top you bring!

When it comes to packing for your next trip, focus on comfort and reliability over style points. Sure, a cute pair of sandals might look great in photos, but are they going to carry you through miles of exploring? My Merrell Moab hiking boots and cotton maxi skirt may not be the most glamorous items, but they’ve earned their spot in my suitcase. If you’re building your own packing list, start with the essentials that keep you moving comfortably.
